Gary J DeVine is a licensed and insured Professional Counselor. He earned a bachelor's degree in Biblical and Theological Studies from Gordon College in 2001 and a master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 2006. Later, he received training in Motivational Interviewing by expert Michael Levy, Ph.D. Gary has worked in many settings, including partial-hospital, prison, detox, and outpatient facilities. He is trained in dual-diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorders and group treatment for sex offenders.
Gary practices Christian Psychology, which merges the Bible, two millennia of practical theology, and psychology to understand the human psyche and behavior. He bases his understanding of the human psyche on biblical studies and psychological research. In practice, Gary combines techniques developed by Christian Psychologists and cognitive behaviorists.
His primary approach is a cognitive behavioral approach called Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT). ACT has been proven effective in over 1,000 randomized trials. He also uses Motivational Interviewing to treat substance abusers and structural family systems techniques with couples. What most distinguishes his practice is his emphasis on prayer, dependence on the Holy Spirit, faithfulness to biblical principles, and FAITH.
