Why I Became a Pastoral Therapist
My faith was key in my becoming a Pastoral Licensed Counselor. I had been in the field of counseling (secular) for many years and learned the many approaches to counseling which mostly were some operant conditioning techniques and cognitive reframing, coupled with some behavior modification. These were okay, but to me lacked the ability to reach the core issues which emanate from a skewed belief system, which lends itself to faulty reasoning.
My counseling approach involves the use of belief therapy. I provide support and practical feedback to help clients resolve current problems and long-standing patterns. Our thought patterns, mood and behavior are all impacted by our belief system; many erroneous beliefs about various aspects of life can cause significant disruption in one or more life areas. By utilizing the TRACE counseling model of belief therapy, in a faith-based counseling approach, I provide guidance and support, while helping the patron overcome the negative beliefs that are causing life controlling problems.
